Countries: Canada

Canada was a Dominion at the time of the first World War and therefore loyal to the King of England. Therefore Canada was subject to the traditions and leadership of the British military and those Canadians who flew with the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service wore the appropriate uniforms and insignia. It was not until 1918 that two all Canadian Squadrons were formed and the 1919 the Canadian Air Force came into existence. The badges for this period were outstanding designs.

Unfortunately politics were rife and again the designation was revised to that of the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1924.The first wing in the RCAF had the lettering straight across. It only existed a mere five months before the design was revised to have the "C" superimposed over the RAF. This lasted until 1947.
